The "Creation" behind the image.

Last Friday I promised a follow up on my last post with some pictures of how I created the image. The "behind the scenes" part of that image so to speak.

First I took the crate I use for a light stand and took the books out of it and put my Nalgene bottles in it. But I wanted light to stream though the cracks ... (It's after dark. Where am I going to find bright light to stream through those cracks?) Well, you make it.

We all know that the difference between a good image and a bad image is usually the use of light ... and sometimes the total lack thereof.

So here is what I did.

I took my tripod and flipped the pole around so I could hang my camera upside down underneath.  That way, I could achieve the depth of field I desired without getting camera shake.

I took my flash, set it on top of the crate and pointed it toward my reflector. Now there would be a big spread of light hitting the backside of the crate. This way it doesn't look like a flash was just set behind the box. Instead it actually makes everything outside the box over-expose just as if it were good old-fashioned sunlight. (Note that the upside-down book titled Waking the Dead (by John Eldrege) is a crucial element in making this image. HAHA. I'm just kidding. But hey, since it's in the picture you may as well know what it is. I haven't finished it. But I love the message so far. Quite worth the time to read.)

The Flashlight. This flashlight is a special flashlight designed for fancy smancy light only. It cost me something like $380!!!! Actually, it only cost like $20. And that's good news for my photographer followers. I used this for my fill light. I added the gel filter to give it a warmer tone ... approximate cost for that was nothing.

Put all these elements together and you get two things: one, your family wondering where the lightning storm outside your windows came from, and two, an image that gives the feeling of being outside.

I will endeavor to post every night this week but I would beg you to be sure to read this upcoming Thursday morning's post. It will be on a subject that I hold very dearly and would love it if you would take the time to check it out.

My bro, Konner

Konner is one of those over-achiever types who isn't going to let the world get in his way. He's fun, stylish, smart, and has a deep love for the Lord and his family. He's also a great workout buddy.

I hope you enjoy them. It's great having a family who is willing to support and give time while I am ever trying to capture, create and discover something amazing . . . in
this case it's easy. He's Konner. What else can I say? So with no further ado, meet my bro, Konner!

The last of Samantha & Jared's Engagement photos. . .

Sorry I didn't post last night. It was a bit of a busy day, trying to knock out a bunch of images that I was editing for a follow photographer that I've been assisting with two awesome engagement sessions.

I love editing images almost as much as I love taking images . . . almost.  It's when I make my transition from being a people-pleaser to an artist. It's great fun. I can usually only take a few hours at a time before I find I have to get up and do something else. I'm not sure why. It could be that my eyes get tired of looking at a screen or maybe my brain just needs a break. But I figured you might enjoy knowing that I don't actually sit in front of my computer 24/7 and only take breaks to take more pictures.

Okay, so here are some of the last photos I'll post from this engagement session. I know for some of you this is old hat since they were on my facebook page (Create link) (I would love it if you would support me by being a fan of my page!) but they're not on my blog . . . and my blog needs to have them too. And, I liked it. :) It was a fun engagement session. Doing engagement photography in downtown Chicago (or wedding photography for that matter) is always good times. Actually, most all major cities have a lot to offer for unique, out-of-the-box photography. A game I kind of like to play when I'm doing photography in Chicago is looking for cool light, no matter the background. If I find cool light I'll have a cool image. Cool light can be found in strangest places. And I often feel that it is my job to find it. You know, I swear it's like hide and go seek. But even more rewarding. Sometimes I'm pretty sure it's waiting for me and my camera to get grab it. It's like it says to me, "Hey you! Party in your camera is about to happen if you come over here!" My camera and I are all about a good party with light and friends. Put the two together and you have something really going for you. :)

Ahhhhhh, the joy of light at the edge of a an overhang. It's something amazing for sure.

Stairways are great places to find light too.

Angels aren't they?

Shadows are another thing I really like a lot! Okay, I like them a lot a lot.

Soft light . . . so calming.

It's funny just how happy these couples are when we are out taking pictures. I mean, last I checked, a lot of people think that getting your picture taken just isn't fun. LOL. NOT ANYMORE! We have good times when we go out. . . that's one of my secrets to good pictures. If you aren't having a good time, you aren't going to get good photos. People want to see real joy in images of themselves. Ya know?

No long title under this one. Sound good?

I think we should just enjoy this one too. What do ya say?

What would an engagement session be in Chicago without a little grunge?

She said "yes" with an extra big smile when she saw that bling I'm sure. :)

New Born—Jack Williams

Last night I was at my Aunt and Uncle's home for a Welcome-Jack-into-the-world party. (I have NO idea what the real name is for something like that.) So I brought my camera along for fun. I thought it would be nice to go ahead and grab some images of the little guy for his parents while he is still so small. It's really amazing how fast newborns change. So, here are a few of what I got.

That's his Mother's wedding ring. . . yeah. Tiny cute feet. I guess you could say, you can take the photographer out of the wedding but you can't take the wedding out of the photographer.

If you could have seen what was on my nose you would have looked at me just like that too. :)

Just too cute. I have this feeling he's going to be just as cute as his older brother.
