The one who inspired my photography.

May I introduce you to Joy!

oh joy

She was one of the most inspiring photographers I had ever met. I remember the first time I really noticed someone's photography as outstandingly, outrageously and perfectly awesome! It was Joy. I remember thinking, "Man, if I ever get into photography I would want to be a wedding photographer . . . a wedding photographer like, Joy. Even though our styles are now a bit different, I still love Joy's art. It's wonderful! She always gets what she is after: fun! Her clients love her, they love her fun look on life . . .  they just love Joy.

A year or so past and what do ya know, I did get into photography! I went ahead and took one photography class that Joy happen to be an instructor. I started working for a non-profit organization shortly after that in the graphic arts department, in hopes I would learn a lot more about what it means to have professional images.

I remember thinking more than once to myself that if I could ever work and learn under any wedding photographer, I would work for Joy Lyn! That would be a dream come true. . . but that would never happen. I mean, I was just a newbie photographer. Well, guess what, I'm sitting in my office and I get this call. It was Joy! I couldn't believe it! Seriously, I couldn't believe it! Not only did she offer me the chance to carry her bags and even shoot a little, but she even offered to pay me! WOW, a dream come true. It was one of those serendipitous moments in life that can only come from God. And I praise him for it. There was no way it could have happened otherwise. This was just too good to be true.

I don't remember now, but I think she told me she had like twenty-something weddings lined up that year and would love it if I could help her with some of them. I think I ended up shooting about ten weddings with her that year. I just loved it. I photographed every wedding as best as I could. I watched her every move.  It was fast-paced, hard work, creatively stretching as could be. . . and just plain fun. Each time I photographed a wedding I loved it even more than the last.

I owe so much to Joy for her investment in my life as a photographer. And I just wanted to take this moment to give a shout out for Joy Lyn Photography! And say thanks! I can never really repay her. She handed me my dream that day she hired me. I can't really put the feeling into words that I had when I was living that dream—learning first hand how to shoot weddings under the one I considered to be the very best in the industry.

Thanks, Joy! I really appreciate you!

Dane Sanders' workshop. Near boulder, CO.

I have been putting off writing about a workshop I did a few weeks ago out in near Boulder, CO for way too long. "That was life changing. . . " were the words I used to tell Dane how much I loved my time at the workshop. They are also the words I will use to tell you about it. It was life changing! I learned so much and got so much clarity about myself and my business. I feel more equipped than ever before about myself and how I work.

There was so much that I learned that has truly changed me there is no way I can write about it all now. So I will pick the first one that struck me.

I like to give things my best try. I try very hard to be a professional photographer. I try very hard to be organized about my time. I try very hard to learn and know everything there is to know about photography, especially in the area of wedding photography. . . and the list goes on and on. But that's the problem: I try.

To "try" has nothing to do with "being" or "doing." It's like a thirsty guy walking up to me and I go to hand him a bottle of cool water and all he does is try to take it out of my hand. My hand is open . . . and he tries very hard, yet does nothing. I tell him to take it out of my hand. I'm confused why he just doesn't take it. All he does is he stand there and try. . . his fingers are wrapped around it, his eyes are fixed on it . . . yet he simply doesn't take it. He doesn't pick it up out of my hand. That man was no closer to getting a drink of water than he was before I even offered it. It's sad really, to see a person who knows what they want and need, but sits and tries.

I've often been like that thirsty dude. Trying to get things organized. Trying to get my photography out in front of people. Trying to get people to understand who I am as a photographer. Trying to show people why I have something different to offer them. Trying—when in fact it was time to start being the Britton Felber I was meant to be. It's time to start doing the things I need to do. It's time to truly commit in a way that is life changing. It's time to be the one who truly, "captures, creates, discovers . . . something amazing!" in everyone's life that I photograph. I'm done trying. I'm going to be Britton Felber.

Here are some of the photos we took at the workshop. Meet Jenny and Allen.
They were so cute together it was just fun. . . the hard part . . . keeping my fingers warm. . . Allen's fingers . . . well, yeah. I can only imagine they weren't too bad.

We had a total blast with Jenny & Allen. We were so glad they came out and let us photograph them.
